Dogs have become more and more part of the family in recent years, we take them (almost) everywhere so that they don’t have to stay home alone.
Unfortunately, dogs still can’t go everywhere with you then, so what do you do?
A dog hotel is a good option, especially if you have already brought your dog on holiday but just want to go to that one nice place or restaurant where dogs are not allowed.
Or you want to go on holiday by plane to a country that is not yet really animal-friendly.
Whatever the reason, if you are a good dog owner, you naturally want the best for your four-legged friend so that you can leave him carefree.
I’m lucky enough to have been in Spain for a while and I’m even more lucky to be staying where I am right now.
Since mid-March I have been staying with Angie McCready in Salinas, Alicante, Spain.
Angie had a dog rescue until 3 years ago and has rescued and successfully rehomed more than 7,000 (!) dogs in 17 years.
In all that time there were hardly ever less than 30 dogs and puppies that were brought here to safety and happily homed all over the world!
Many Spanish hunters use their dogs as if they were tools as you can read (In Dutch) here and dog rescues are very much needed in Spain.
Unfortunately, Angie didn’t get any younger and she had to make the difficult decision 3 years ago to stop dog rescue.
To this day, she is still regularly asked whether she would like to take in another dog or a litter of puppies that have been found in the rubbish bin or have been dumped in a remote place.
Even if she says no she will always help to find a suitable home for the dogs in need.
At the moment she has 5 (rescue) dogs of her own, these are Leo, Charlie, Coco, Toots and Pickle.
Angie was into dog-rescue for so long that it was almost impossible to get away from it.
So instead of starting a rescue again, which has just become too much, she decided to start a small dog-hotel for the simple reason that she still loves the company of dogs.
There is room for 2 dogs, with exceptions of course if someone has more dogs.
And so, spring and summer are coming, so the swimming pool is in full use again, if you have four-legged friends who really love the water, then they’ve come to the right place.
Playing is certainly not a problem here either, there is a fairly large garden where they can play as much as they want and get dirty.
And sleep? That does not happen outside in a kennel or a dog crate.
No, all dogs, including the guests, sleep in Angie’s bedroom and even on the bed if they want!
Do they prefer to sleep in the living room? No problem either, because there is a wonderful 3-seater sofa, a 2-seater sofa and a large easy chair that even a large Galgo such as Leo can easily fit in.
The area where Angie lives is in the countryside, wonderfully quiet and far away from the big cities, your dog (s) can completely relax here and also enjoy a well-deserved holiday or a day of rest from the owners 😉
And are you afraid that your dogs can get away from here? Then I can reassure you, the whole plot is fenced with a height of at least 1.80m and has 2 large entrance gates.
Your dog(s) are therefore guaranteed in a 5* hotel with all the luxury you can expect from a dog hotel!
